Reproductive Biology Of Goatfish, Upeneus spp. In Terengganu Waters, South China

Two species of goatfish, Upeneus sulphureus and U. bensasi play a significant role in the demersal trawl fishery in the Terengganu waters, South China Sea. A study on reproductive biology of goatfish was conducted in this area during march 1995 to february 1996. Results of the study showed that catch composition of goatfish was dominated by U. sulphureus (54%) and U. bensasi was 36%, and others 10%
The peaks of spawning for U. sulphureus were found in march and july, and only in march for U. bensasi. The length at maturity obtained from the two methods were 141.81 to 146.77 mm for U. sulphureus and 143.05 to 151.62 mm for U. bensasi. Sex ratio of U. sulphureus and U. bensasi showed that females of both species dominated the catch. The ratio of males and females of U. sulphureus as well as U. bensasi were significantly different from 1:1 (p>0.05).
