Two species of goatfish, Upeneus sulphureus and U. bensasi play a significant role in the demersal trawl fisheriy in Terengganu waters, Peninsular Malaysia. The studied of mortality rates were carried out in this area. The fish sample were collected using experimental trawling in the Terengganu waters. The sampling in this area was performed for 12 months from March 1995 to February 1996.

Estimates of total mortality derived from three different methods were Z = 3.30 to 5.93 for U. sulphureus and Z = 2.65 to 5.57 for U. bensasi. Estimates of natural mortality derived from three different methods for U. sulphureus were less varied than for U bensasi.
