Growth Parameters Of The Scad (Decapterus spp.) Caught From The East Coast Of Peninsular Malaysia
By Wijopriono, Mohd. Zki Mohd. Said, and Priyanto Rahardjo
Two species of scad, Decapterus macrosoma and D. russelli play a significant role in pelagic fishery of the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, both in terms of yield and economic values. Studies on the growth parameters of these two species of scads have been conducted during a year, from May 1996 to April 1997. The growth parameters were estimated by analysing length frequency distribution of the catch. Modal Progression Analysis with Gulland and Holt plot method (1959) and iterative procedure using ELEFAN program were employed to estimate K and L. The results showed that there was little variability in the estimated values of K and L. The growth parameters, L and K of D. macrosoma derived from Gulland and Holt plot gave the estimated values of 25.71 cm and 1.00 per year and those of D. macrosoma derived from the ELEFAN program gave the esimated values of 27.70 cm and 0.94 per year. The estimate of growth parameters L and K of D. russelli derived from Gulland and Holt plot and the ELEFAN program were 25.93 cm and 1.08 per year : 28.20 cm and 1.10 per year
