Two spesies of goatfish or kuniran, Upeneus sulphureus and U. bensasi play a significant role in the demersal trawl fishery in the Terengganu Waters, Peninsular Malaysia. The studied of alternative management measures for the fishery were examined. The sampling in this area was performed for 12 moths from March 1995 to February 1996.
The current estimate of exploitation rate (E) for U. sulphureus was exceeding the E01 level also length at first capture was very close to the length at maturity. Management of goatfish stock in Terengganu Waters may consequently be performed by changing the current status of fishery, reducing fishing effort (number of trawl, number of haul, or time of haul) and increasing size at entry remain at present level. Since U. bensasi is currently being fished at levels that bellow E10 steps should probably be taken to restrict further growth in fleet capacity. Fishing effort in Terengganu Waters could be reduced, since the relative abundance of U. sulphureus and U. bensasi are greatest there.
